Kaho’olawe: The True Story of an Island and Her People is the little picture book that could!

The picture book Kaho’olawe traces the island’s roots, from its birth through the 50+ years fight for social justice led by the members and volunteers of the Protect Kaho’olawe ‘Ohana. Their selfless dedication and sacrifice continues to resonate today. 

We are delighted that Kaho’olawe has been named an honor winner in the nonfiction category of the 2026 SJLA by the Literature & Social Responsibility SIG of the International Literary Association.

This award celebrates outstanding books that address social and ecological responsibility and encourage action by their readers.
